Design trends across the industry in 2018 saw our bond with nature grow ever stronger. Bare materials and untreated woods. Metals with forced patinas, copper and brass. Industrial style taps, crittall and textured glass. There seems to be no sign of these trends slowing this year. So what else for 2019? Here are 10 trends to watch out for.

1.Stand Alone Furniture
In 2019 we will see a move towards kitchens that comprise of individual pieces of furniture rather than all of the same. This adds intrigue to a design and allows vintage pieces to be worked in, without them looking odd. We are moving towards a sustainable future and as such we will see more life breathed into old and existing pieces.

2.Freezer Drawers
Refrigerators with ‘freezer drawers’ is a trend we are seeing more and more of. Its no surprise as this simple reworking of an everyday kitchen appliance means that our freezer drawers can be as organized as our busy 2019 diaries. This Sub-zero version has been encased in hand aged walnut. Refrigeration at its finest!

3.Tap Technology
Tap technology has stepped up a notch. We now have instant boiling, filtered and sparking water for all applications, sink or pot filler (like the one pictured). Plus with the availability of finishes ramping up there is one to compliment every material palette. We rarely fit a kitchen without one.

5.Paired Back Design
Improvements in kitchen tech means there is less clutter and as such this trend for space, clean lines and surfaces has spilled over into the cabinetry design. Flat faced cabinets with simple finger pull opens and long stretches of uncluttered surface. Plus an oversized recessed plinth gives the impression that both runs float effortlessly.

6.Reeded Glass
Reeded glass will be everywhere this year. This finish adds a wonderful layer of texture to a space, a great tool for the kitchen to mix up all those straight lines and smooth surfaces. The reededeffect works well with natural materials. Plus the glass is semi opaque so you reveal a glimpse, not the entire contents beyond.

7.Dark Finishes
In 2018 we saw the trend for dark painted finishes and heavily grained woods, and its set to continue into 2019. Popular applications have been walnut inner carcass with dark painted outer, dark wood cabinetry laid bare and stunning hand worked pieces like this unit comprised of hand aged American black walnut.

8.Feature Taps
Feature taps will continue a grow in popularity for the coming year. With the vast array of finishes and styles now available, the tap is as important to the design as the work surface or cabinetry materials. Our clients love this Double Gooseneck Regulator by Waterworks in a brass finish with metal wheel handle inspired by industrial controls from the early 1900’s.

9.Banquette Seating
We are seeing an emerging trend with banquette style seating, in an area where kitchen islands and breakfast bars have dominated. Banquette style seating is a fantastic use of space and offers a more comfortable seating to relax and get some much needed headspace in this fast paced world we live in.

10.Open Fronted Shelving
Open shelving and glass fronted cabinets have become popular as we fight to keep our surfaces clutter free. Open shelving allows a homeowners personality to be laid bare with displays of quirky objetd’art an ever changing glimpse of personality and heart through the seasons of 2019. A year that is set to test needs a little warmth.
