The Bruton Kitchen
A lovingly restored family home in Bruton Somerset dating back to the 1600’s.
Views out over rolling meadows through original stone mullion windows, ancient oak beams, original flagstone flooring, elm doors and wonderfully wonky lath and plaster walls.
The Brief
To create an atmospheric space bursting with character and warmth, practical and beautiful, with a contemporary edge, yet befitting of a 400-year-old farm house. The kitchen should ooze ‘Papilio’ style, blending design skills with cleverly contrasting furniture and the clients love for colour. The family of 4 who love to bake in their original AGA, wanted lots of work space and clever storage.
The Kitchen Design
We designed a large free-standing island, positioned centrally and hand painted in a wonderfully sunny yellow. The island was designed with legs, so it sits light in the space, making the most of the original stone floor. We mixed cabinet doors with open shelving to add intrigue and, sourced a huge ancient elm timber for the worktop which was hand finished by our talented cabinet makers to accentuate the grain.
The Kitchen Island
The kitchen island offers plentiful space for prep along with space to perch and works perfectly with the original stone mullion inglenook that frames the Aga at the head of the island, inviting you to demonstrate your culinary skills.
Functionality and Style
Along the sink run, semi glazed wall cabinets painted in Edward Bulmers ‘Lilac Pink’ with 1970s style sliding doors provide a retro feel to the room along with an opportunity for the client to display glass wear and favourite china. Discrete lighting to the back and underside of the eye level furniture provide much needed illumination and a touch of drama to the room. Below this, a more contemporary run of low level, flat faced cabinetry painted in Zoffany ‘Tabac’. A simple Belfast stye sink and stunning brass Lefroy Brooks tap, which pairs beautifully with the magnificent Belgium Blue Limestone worktop complete with million-year-old fossils.
