The art of kitchen islands

Maximising space in your kitchen is a key concern when planning the kitchen of your dreams. Kitchen islands provide the perfect solution.

We at Papilio bespoke kitchens are experts in making practicality beautiful.
Listening intently to our clients, we delight in designing each bespoke kitchen to fit their requirements. Kitchen islands are metamorphic, transforming from tables to worktops to storage at a moment’s notice.

The Copper Kitchen is one of our favourite contemporary kitchens designs, we combined storage and seating in a stunning central kitchen island. Copper cladding and timber provide an intriguing combination of warm textures. The island ties in with the rest of the worktops. The combination of solid walnut, solid oak, copper and neolith in the kitchen worktops develops the character and depth of the Grade 2 listed property’s unique kitchen.

A key consideration for our Copper Kitchen clients was entertaining. They love hosting dinner parties so we designed and installed a bespoke ice trough perfect for serving champagne at any celebration. Ensure your champagne is cool beforehand by fitting one of Sub-Zero’s innovative wine fridges under the island’s worktop.

Rich Calacatta marble is used to contrast with the deep walnut cabinetry in the Marble Kitchen’s island. Working with a long and narrow space, one side of the contemporary kitchen was covered with cabinets and maximised the remaining space by installing seating in the beautiful marble island.

Alternatively, frame the kitchen island as a bold centrepiece in your kitchen. Differentiate this space from the rest by using a strong colour or different material. If you only want a pop of colour, choose coloured seating that draws the eye and entices people to sit down and have a bite to eat.

A common concern with including kitchen islands in your handmade kitchen is fluidity in the space. But, islands enhance rather than hinder smooth movement around your kitchen space, as you turn from the sink to chop vegetables on the island’s countertop.

How a kitchen island can fit in with the ‘golden triangle’ theory of functionality is exemplified in our Rectory Kitchen. To add a modern element into this traditional handmade kitchen, we installed an L-shaped island. The island allows the clients to use their traditional Belfast sink to wash up or rinse organic vegetables watching their children play in the garden out of the glazed panels. Nature outside is brought inside this fabulous contemporary kitchen.

Kitchen islands enhance the entire handmade kitchen, allowing a space for the household to gather around in the room. They’re multi-use, from seating, to food preparation and acting as impromptu bars, while offering much-needed storage.

Get your cocktail shaker at the ready in the evening and serve up an English breakfast come the morning. Kitchen islands easily allow you to get everything ready in the kitchen while keeping an eye on the rest of the room.
