The beauty of Scandinavian kitchen design is that it tends to sit comfortably within most modern-day design schemes. This is very possibly because the might of Scandinavian design is such, that many modern trends adopt elements of this style to create their look. Here Papilio takes a look at some of the great Scandinavian designers of our time who’s influence is still present in modern kitchen design today.
Many of us are familiar with Arne Jacobsen, well known because his iconic Egg Chair, but less people are aware that he was also responsible for designing the first tap that concealed all the mechanical parts for Vola in 1969. His designs continue to be produced to this day by Vola.

Another Goliath of the design world whose influence can be seen in many Modern Scandinavian kitchen design is Hans Wegner; largely due to his Wishbone chairs which have been continuously in production since 1950, but he actually created almost 500 chair designs in his lifetime.
One of the lesser known but hugely influential Designers in Scandinavia was Kaare Klint he was actually one of the original Danish furniture designers, sadly his life was over before the “Golden” era of Scandi design had even began but many of his successors sought inspiration from his early designs.
Kaj Franck another great, whose Kartio glassware has a simple timeless quality to it, so much so that very few people will have held a drinking vessel that wasn’t influenced by him. Many of us will even have glassware designed or at least influenced by him in our kitchen cabinets.
Jens Quistgaard is famed for his Kobenstyle cookware, which was much lighter than cast iron and consequently more affordable as well as being attractive. The in genius and most famed design was probably the saucepan from which the lid doubled as a trivet. He also designed an eclectic array of kitchen utensils and crockery that are perfect for the styling of a modern Scandinavian kitchen design.

At Papilio we all admire the beauty of Scandinavian design and allow Nordic style to influence many of our bespoke kitchens. Both the Georgian Manor Kitchen and Victorian Townhouse kitchens which appear in our gallery have strong links back to Scandi style and obviously our “Scandinavian Kitchen” with its bold pops of mustard yellow has been featured in a vast amount of publications including the front page of the Sunday Times.
