The Scandinavian or ‘Scandi’ trend is here to stay, not only in the kitchen, but throughout the whole home. Here at Papilio we are huge fans of this style of furniture and many of our bespoke kitchens are influenced by the designers, stylists and colour pallets from Scandinavia. The beauty of the Nordic or Scandinavian kitchen is that its timeless simplicity brings out the personality of both the owner and the home.
What we love most about the Scandinavian kitchen is the clean lines, minimal clutter with vibrant pops of colour. The furniture is often a canvas for home owners to inject their our style and taste, an opportunity to show off their collection of objects and art work, which is particularly appealing in the kitchen as it bring character to what can be a rather dull space dominated by the bland shaker kitchen.
The furniture in a Scandinavian kitchen oozes sophistication and at the same time the design can be far more interesting and fun than traditional styles of kitchen. The architecture of the furniture allows yourkitchen designer more freedom to create new shapes that are not dictated by symmetry but still sit harmoniously in the space. This is a very strong reason why a bespoke kitchen company is better suited to designing this style of kitchen over the high street modular styles, which rely on repetitive shapes with limited options.
The colour pallet in a Scandinavian kitchen is often composed of bare timers and muted colours. Although a simple white or grey painted finish is commonly used in a well-designed scheme the use of a colour can have a dramatic effect on the outcome. Our “Scandinavian kitchen” which features dramatic use of a mustard yellow has been highly commended by many journalists and publications, it was even featured on the front page of the Sunday Times (Homes supplement). As an alternative to a painted finish we often use a product called Fenix, which is completely matt, but does not scratch or show fingerprints, one highly respected interior design even referred to this product as “which craft” when we first introduced it to the project.
Choosing the correct timber is a very important decision as this will inject more personality and individuality into the final kitchen design. At Papilio we have thousands of different veneers to choose from, ranging from straight grains to pippy in every timber and even beyond as we also have a vast range of handmade veneers that we source direct from Italy. By using veneers, we can control the exact finish of the bespoke kitchen and even introduce repeat or contrasting patterns. We also have a huge selection of finishes to apply to the veneers, ranging from wax to lacquer all with different levels of sheen or completely mat.
If you are looking for a bespoke kitchen designer or any bespoke furniture for that matter to be designed in a Scandinavian style, we are Papilio and we would be delighted to talk to you about your project.
