The hidden scullery in Bath - Papilio Kitchens

Papilio – Architects of Furniture

As a bespoke kitchen company, we need to be extremely creative, we are essentially architects of furniture. Every one of our bespoke kitchens is different to the next, every cabinet is sized and finished specifically for each individual project. We do not work from a set of predetermined templates, which gives us a huge advantage over most of the kitchen industry who pose as bespoke but in fact have very ridged limitation to their cabinet sizes.
These details are subtle individually but when implemented consistently throughout a bespoke kitchen they provide the furniture with a sense of belonging and harmony with the space and the architecture, this is the true difference between bespoke and modular and one of the many time consuming design features that require a skilled technician to draft.

We recently completed a project in Somerset that had an interesting brief for the scullery: “It needed to be functional and accessible, but also hidden during dinner parties and social gatherings.” So, we developed the concept of “The Secret Scullery”.  This concept involved the doors to the scullery being disguised as kitchen cabinets.  In their closed position they sat discretely in a bank of our full height bespoke kitchen cabinets and in the open position the doors nestled neatly into a recess, held neatly in place with hidden magnets creating a panelled door lining as if there were no doors at all.  The precision required to achieve this relied on the accuracy of the drawing package and the unquestionable skill of the cabinet maker.  Such fineness can only be achieved in handmade kitchens.

The space within the scullery was also carefully considered to maximise functionality.  The dryer and washing machine were stacked with a pull-out shelf in-between to help with unloading and loading and there was a dedicated space for laundry baskets to be stowed away.  The worksurface were fabricated in sheet stainless steel to ensure easy cleaning and durability and nestled at the end of the run of stainless steel we located an oversized vintage ceramic sink to cater for any items that required washing by hand.  The playfulness of this secret scullery was enriched by painting it in “The Botanist” which is a wonderful, striking, mossy green.

This is just one example of the ingenious ideas a true bespoke kitchen company can create and how our design can extend and interact with rooms beyond the kitchen to provide flow and continuity throughout the entire home.
