The Secret Scullery
Situated within the heart of rural Somerset stands a grand Old Rectory, dating back to the 19th century.
Within this impressive building Papilio had the pleasure of designing a rather special scullery to accompany the luxury kitchen also designed by Papilio.
The Brief
The brief for the scullery was that it needed to be hidden and functional. We came up with the concept of a ‘secret scullery’, whereby the doors to enter the scullery were disguised within the kitchen cabinets. In the open position the doors nestled neatly into recesses creating a panelled door lining as if there were no doors at all. The playfulness of this secret space was enriched by painting the cabinets in wonderfully vibrant and yet sophisticated “The Botanist” by The Paint and Paper Library, which is a wonderful mossy green.
Function & Form
The washing machine and dryer were stacking in the scullery to maximise the use of space and to improve the ergonomics of using these appliances, we also added a pullout surface below the dryer to help when loading. A bench was introduced, below a row of hand carved walnut pegs set against our faux wall panelling, a useful place to sit whilst pulling on boots.
The handles for the scullery cabinets were also designed and fabricated by Papilio in a hand aged brass which was recessed into the cabinet doors. These beautiful but simple handles have a glorious utilitarian feel to them which compliments the green cabinets with glimmers of the golden brass shining through. The brass butt hinges were also antiqued using the same technique to match the handles.
Finishing Touches
To continue the theme of utilitarian we selected stainless steel worktops which contrast wonderfully with the green cabinets and wall panels and will age gracefully with an authentic patina.
The final addition was a sink that the client found and fell in love with from a reclamation yard this was framed with a mass of white metro tiles and illuminated with a single pendant light and a stunning articulated wall mounted mixer tap by Hornbeam Ivy.
