The Cowbridge Kitchen, Wales
An Understated Yet Distinctive Statement in Timber & Stone
Set in a contemporary, architect-designed home in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, The Cowbridge Kitchen celebrates natural and engineered materials.
The Bespoke Kitchen Island
At the heart of the Papilio design is the contemporary kitchen island. Purposefully positioned as the focal point, it grounds the overall design. The kitchen island remains in constant dialogue with the views beyond the glass. The worktop is crafted from deep black Richlite. Its soft, matt finish provides a striking contrast to the warmth of the handmade oak cabinetry below.
The island drawers are crafted from a single plank of oak, selected for its character. Cracks and voids filled with resin highlight the beauty of natural timber and its imperfections, making the island feel organic and echoing the landscape outside.
Each drawer is meticulously finger-jointed by our master cabinetmakers. This detail speaks quietly yet confidently of craftsmanship. These joints are not hidden. Instead, they become part of the story, giving the island a unique presence and a sense of permanence.
Appliances & Seamless Integration
Behind the bespoke kitchen island, the rear wall is finished in black Fenix. Deliberately understated, it recedes visually, allowing the island to take centre stage. Integrated into this wall is a Fisher and Paykel fridge-freezer offering generous internal space, a discreet dishwasher, and two Miele ovens seamlessly built into the cabinetry.
Features and Storage
A black sink is paired with a black Zip water tap that delivers both boiling and sparkling water, maintaining a restrained palette while enhancing everyday functionality. Concealed within the rear wall is a hidden door that leads to the clutter-saving pantry, preserving clean lines and visual calm throughout the contemporary kitchen design.
Bespoke Worktop
The rear worktop is made from specially sourced black limestone, chosen for its subtle depth and variation. Natural fossils remain visible within the dark stone, scattered gently across the surface, adding another quiet layer of texture and history to the contemporary kitchen.
