The Cotswolds Manor House Kitchen

At the foot of the Cotswold Escarpment, sits a rather grand 17th Century Grade II listed stone manor house.

With elements dating to 1640, including period features such as inglenook and stone fireplaces, mullion windows, exposed timbers, flagstone floors and wooden panelled window seats.

The Brief

In recent years by previous owners the property had undergone renovations which were not sympathetic to the property. The new owners recognised this and instructed Papilio to rework several rooms and bring back the grandeur of this amazing space.

A family of four with two grown up children the homeowners wanted the kitchen to be as functional as it is grand. In a heavy Georgian style, we set about designing a bespoke island compromising a marble surface with hand turned walnut leg detail which would be the centre piece of the kitchen. Enough space to seat 4 informally and incorporating a large drawer and pot rail to store a plethora of cooking implements collected from around the globe during 30 years of travel

Appliances & Seamless Integration

With the lady of the house being the keenest in the kitchen we set cabinet heights to accommodate. Taking note of preferences for appliances we installed a Wolf range with BBQ top, bespoke extraction to suit, above the Wolf Range is a brass pot rail running the full length of the wall beneath a marble shelf. Also required is an instant boiling water tap and a selection of other appliances by Miele. Lastly a Sub-zero fridge freezer which we encase in a stunning bespoke hand antiqued walnut shroud.

Features and Storage

The cabinet internals are all in beautiful walnut veneer with raised and fielded panel doors and solid brass handles. We used a mix of finishes and aging techniques to allow the kitchen to feel as if it had comfortably evolved over generations. For the cabinets opposite the Sub Zero fridge freezer the traditional detailing continues into sliding glazed doors with Victorian style glazing bars. By using sliding doors, we maximised the use of space in the kitchen which is restricted on one side of the island

Bespoke Worktops

Rich Calacatta marble sourced direct from Italy runs around the workspace setting off the stunning walnut and fine details of the cabinetry. To the right of the sink a prep area set out with recessed knife rack and pull out food waste drawer laid out with ergonomic perfection, each detail considered for the preference of the homeowners and the way they interact with the space.

The Scullery

To compliment the kitchen, we have designed in a walk in pantry with Sub Zero wine store as well as ancillary storage, washing machine and dryer. Cabinetry is solid tulip wood with a classic panelled doors and moulded details, painted, with brass butt hinges. At the request of the homeowners treasured canine we have designed a dog shower/sink, with walnut cabinet, only the finest for man’s best friend!
