Mid-century inspired Kitchen in Somerset

In the heart of Somerset close to the market town of Bath sits this lavishly spacious country house.

When we first visited the property during the initial stages of renovation, it was effectively two dwellings connected by garages and outbuildings. The primary objective of the renovation was to change the purpose of this central area providing a better link between the 2 dwellings, bringing the kitchen into this new space as the heart of the family home.

The Kitchen Design

The new space comprises a large kitchen area with two islands, living space and dining area with steel, powder coated floor to ceiling glazed sliding doors, flooding the space with natural light. The large black frames, softened by original arched recesses and internal doors, creating a balance of soft and hard lines which form part of the overall design language.

The design for the kitchen was inspired by the architecture of the space and its past utilitarian function, the existing Mid- Century furniture and a curved, glazed antique cabinet provided by the client. Constructed in teak this piece had taken a wonderful rich red hue which we pulled into other areas of the design. We used this as a frontage for one of the islands, building a cabinet around the piece, matching in the tone and glazing detail. This island, designated for cooking also cleverly houses a sunken Bora Pro hob and a 90cm Miele oven.

2 Kitchen Islands

This first island, designated for cooking cleverly houses a sunken Bora Pro hob and a 90cm Miele oven.

The second island, geared towards food preparation and entertaining has a row of stools to perch, perfect for informal breakfasts and sharing a bottle of wine. This island has more of an industrial feel with a metal framework and black cabinetry, the metal frame extends to provide the overhang for the breakfast bar. Clad in untreated copper, which will patina naturally over time creating a unique canvas of fond memories, ever changing for years to come.

Features and Storage

Low cabinets along the perimeter wall with golden tones of American Black Walnut, topped with cool Carrara marble. Stylish handle cut out detail in recognition to the mid-century influence, within each of the drawers a discrete integrated light which illuminates upon opening. Situated opposite the prep island, a Belfast sink and Armstrong tap both by Perrin and Row. Further along is the striking jet black 4 door range oven by Everhot and pot filler tap again by Perrin and Rowe and original copper hood from the former kitchen reworked into the scheme with the copper top island detail.

Functionality

Hidden away in the tall bank of cabinets are a fridge freezer by Fisher and Paykel. Pocket doors tuck back to reveal a coffee making station and small sink complete with the boiling water tap of choice by Zip Tap UK. Central to this piece of furniture are doors that fold back neatly into a recess to reveal the walk-in pantry and a plethora of additional storage space.
