Open-Plan Designs for Contemporary Kitchens

At Papillio Bespoke Kitchens, we thrive on challenges. An open-plan kitchen design requires experience, exceptional skill, problem-solving and creativity. Today’s contemporary kitchens are more than just a place to cook; they are a hub of activity, a social epicentre, and often, the true heart of the home. If you’re dreaming of a contemporary kitchen that feels spacious, connected, and functional, an open-plan layout might be the perfect solution.

But what exactly makes open-plan kitchens so appealing for contemporary living?

The most obvious benefit of an open-plan kitchen is the removal of physical barriers. By merging the kitchen with the dining and/or living areas, you create a seamless flow that instantly makes your home feel more expansive and inviting.

Open-plan kitchens enhance sociability and connectivity for the entire family, fostering a sense of togetherness. A contemporary kitchen with an open-plan design allows you to cook and entertain simultaneously, keeping you connected with family and guests. Imagine prepping dinner while chatting with friends on the sofa or keeping an eye on the kids playing in the living room – all from your kitchen. Harmonious, synchronised and ‘present’ are the key elements, especially for bespoke kitchen designers like us.

Open-plan kitchen design maximises light and space. Walls can block natural light. By removing them, you allow light to flood through your entire living area, making the space feel brighter, airier, and more welcoming.

Bespoke kitchens with an open-plan design offer versatility in living. You can easily adapt the space for different occasions, from intimate family dinners to lively gatherings. Furniture can be rearranged to define zones without rigid boundaries, allowing your home to evolve with your lifestyle.

Here are three examples of our recent open-plan kitchens, which embrace versatility, light and connectivity.

The Rectory Kitchen in Bath

The Rectory Kitchen in Bath

The Rectory Kitchen in Bath is a fine example of a modern, functional space that combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary elements, creating a modern yet breathtaking space.

Designed in collaboration with Simon Moray Jones Architects, a large glazed wall and ceiling lantern provide a fresh and airy shell for the open-plan kitchen and dining area – the perfect space for a sociable family. Our team carefully positioned workstations and appliances to continually bring the outside in, while still providing a practical space for the family to cook and entertain. We introduced an L-shaped island configuration to create maximum storage space and workflow. Optimising the view throughout the space, the open-plan kitchen offers ease of movement and functionality.

We designed the Fulham Kitchen in London to maximise natural light and benefit the whole family. A central kitchen island, floor-to-ceiling handmade cabinetry, space for a dining table, a nook for reading and relaxation and a desk station for working from home or homework were all considered in the open-plan contemporary kitchen.

Although the kitchen was also beautiful, with hand-laid oak veneers, slatted wall coverings, top-of-the-range appliances, sophisticated yet playful eco paint by Francesca’s Paints, the bespoke kitchen was functional, unique, and enhanced sociability and connectivity for the entire family.

The Alpine Ski Chalet Kitchen in France

The Alpine Ski Chalet Kitchen in France is another significant example of a modern, practical space that combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary elements. Perched at a high altitude amidst the breathtaking beauty of the French Alps, we conceived a stunning open-plan kitchen in a barn conversion, transforming the space. With the architecture of this unique property in mind, we designed a kitchen that would be perfect for cooking, dining, entertaining, and relaxing. The feature of the open-plan space was the kitchen island, perched on a powder-coated steel frame, floating, which created an airy, spacious feel that corresponded to the spectacular views outside.
