If you love farmhouse-style kitchen design but want the latest technology in a modern setting, then you’re in luck. As bespoke kitchen designers at Papilio, we can design your new handmade kitchen to incorporate that homely and wholesome feel of a farmhouse with contemporary nuances in the space. As experts in kitchen design, we understand the do’s and don’ts of marrying traditional and modern styles. For example, a handmade kitchen in a farmhouse style can showcase a sizeable inkle-nook fireplace or flagstone flooring. We find that bold but muted colours make those key timeless features and bring them into the 21st century. Being playful with colour, whether with the lighting, hardware, or furniture, will brighten even the lowest farmhouse ceilings. At the same time, painted wooden cabinetry can showcase unique wooden finishes synonymous with the farmhouse feel. Modern farmhouse-style handmade kitchens focus on natural materials, subtle design, hints of colour and the latest technology.

For our Richlite Kitchen in a large country manor house, we had plenty of space to create a contemporary kitchen design that incorporated modern features and farmhouse-style aesthetics. The best example of the juxtaposition was the sizable kitchen island made by hand from a single section of oak with naturally weaved grain and an ultra-modern engineered Richlite worktop. Then, adding the latest technology by Zip and Miele, we married the modern with brass taps by Studio Ore Design for a classic farmhouse-style feel.

For our Bruton Kitchen design in Somerset, we worked with a lovingly restored family home built in the 1600s. It featured original stone mullion windows, ancient oak beams, original flagstone flooring, elm doors, wonderfully wonky lath, and plaster walls – the ultimate farmhouse! Our brief was to create a space that highlighted the original character and warmth but complemented it with a contemporary edge. Again, the free-standing kitchen island was the key feature, which we hand-painted in a wonderfully sunny yellow to add a modern accent. We used Edward Bulmers ‘Lilac Pink’ along the sink run and semi-glazed wall cabinets to utilise more colour. We also used Zoffany ‘Tabac’ paint along the low-level, flat-faced cabinets resulting in a modern but genuine farmhouse kitchen.

For The Bath Kitchen in Somerset, we designed and built the kitchen in a grand old rectory dating back to the 19th century. The modern yet classic farmhouse-style kitchen was realised with traditional cabinetry painted in dark hues so that the expertly executed cabinets would be highlighted. We also designed cleverly ‘hidden’ scullery that needed to be functional and accessible but hidden during dinner parties and social gatherings. The doors to the utility were disguised as kitchen cabinets and painted in a beautiful mossy green colour. The overall finish was a stunning, modern space with a farmhouse-style finish.
