Mid-Century-Inspired Designer Kitchens
One design style that continues to trend in designer kitchens is mid-century styling. Synonymous with quality, simplicity, clean lines and function over fuss and clutter. There is an elegance to mid-century style born from modern Scandinavian and Danish modernist furniture designed between the 1940s and 1960s. Using streamlined and contrasting materials is prominent in the design aesthetic, juxtaposing modern and natural materials.
At Papilio Bespoke Kitchens, we have been designing luxury kitchens for over twenty years. We benefit from knowledge, experience and expert cabinet makers to ensure our designs exceed our client’s expectations. We can apply our vision to create mid-century-inspired kitchens with a personal and original approach.
To achieve a mid-century modern look for our bespoke kitchens, we will consider cabinetry and opt for frameless furniture with clean lines and minimal hardware with mid-tone wood like walnut or teak for a classic look. For countertops, we love marble for quality, luxury, aesthetic prowess, and engineered and highly efficient materials like Fenix or Richlite. For lighting, we love pendant lights for high ceilings and sensor lighting within cabinetry for better function in the kitchen. Reeded or fluted materials such as glass and composites look fantastic in bespoke kitchens with mid-century styling. Reeded glass has a mid-century style and works beautifully in wall cabinetry, cupboards and free-standing kitchen units.
Here are two examples of our favourite mid-century-inspired designer kitchens that exude the design period and demonstrate our skills and vision.
The Frome Kitchen

The Frome Kitchen in Somerset is a beautiful example of mid-century style with contemporary and functional sensibilities. The handmade kitchen embodies our client’s love of Scandinavian design and the architecture of their Edwardian Manor. Key details include a striking black kitchen island with solid brass trim and fluting detail. The worktop deliberately contrasts the solid black of the island, creating interest. In addition, the perimeter cabinets were tinted red to imitate the redwood throughout the property and to tie the look together. Finally, adding reeded glass created a nostalgic accent to the wooden cabinetry, while the modern touches offered a contemporary feel. The result is a truly unique luxury kitchen that is both functional and beautiful.
Mid-Century-Inspired Kitchen

The Mid-Century-Inspired Kitchen in Bath, Somerset, is another fine example of the inspiration taken from the design period. The ample kitchen boasts two kitchen islands, a living space, and a dining area with steel, powder-coated floor-to-ceiling glazed sliding doors for floods of natural light. We pulled inspiration from our client’s existing mid-century furniture and their large, curved, glazed cabinet. We designed low-level cabinetry with golden tones of American black walnut, topped with cool Carrara marble to fit along the perimeter. The mid-century style continued with cut-out detail handles within the drawers and full-height walnut cabinets where the doors fold back into a recess to reveal a walk-in pantry. The result is a sizeable, bright, striking mid-century-inspired kitchen.
