Kitchens for Growing Families

At Papilio, we think that the kitchen is the most important room in the house. It’s where we cook, gather, chat, work, entertain and be a family together.

Our handmade kitchens are designed to our client’s wishes, but we have many design tricks up our sleeves to ensure a perfect new kitchen. We’ve worked with many growing families that want more from their kitchen space, and their needs evolve as the family does. As a result, modern contemporary kitchens can include break-out areas, multi-use breakfast bars, pet stations, kids’ cabinets, soundproofing and more. There are multiple ways to make the bespoke kitchen precisely what you need and want.

In our experience, dedicating areas that offer multi-use is key for an evolving home. A kitchen is more than a food preparation area, so designing spaces that can grow and provide various sections are ideal for modern families.

London open-plan Kitchen

In our Fulham Kitchen project in London, the open-plan space was designed for multi-use, including a break-out/homework area. The Scandinavian-style kitchen was conceived to be fun yet functional but also warm and calming for the young family. We initially introduced slatted wood wall coverings to prevent sound reverberating in the ample open space, but they ultimately became a key aesthetic within the design. A break-out area was developed to encourage engagement, with a sofa and shelving to create the ultimate chill-out zone, enhanced by the homeowner’s stunning mid-century furniture. Along with the sizable kitchen island that works as a breakfast bar and a beautiful dining table, we also integrated a desk area for homework so the whole family could enjoy the space together.

pet friendly kitchen

For our Cotswolds Manor House Kitchen project, we designed a handmade kitchen with a country kitchen style that included areas for the family’s beloved dogs. The 17th Century Grade II listed stone manor house featured inglenook and stone fireplaces, mullion windows, exposed timbers, flagstone floors and wooden panelled window seats. Our design complimented the heritage but also offered a modern twist. And because the family’s dogs were such an important part of their lives, the pet-friendly kitchen included a dog shower/sink with a walnut cabinet that beautifully matched the interiors of the kitchen.

Mid-century style kitchen design

In our Mid-Century Inspired Kitchen in Bath, Somerset, we designed a handmade kitchen with a sitting room for relaxing and entertaining and two kitchen islands for multi-use. The lavishly spacious country house benefitted from the ample space needed for the ambitious design. The first kitchen island was designated for cooking. In contrast, the second one was geared towards food preparation and entertaining with a row of stools to perch, which was perfect for informal breakfasts, homework or sharing a bottle of wine, ideal for making memories and enjoying time together.
