There are numerous advantages to incorporating a kitchen island as part of a luxury kitchen design. Even if space is limited, a freestanding kitchen island can add extra surface space and cabinetry, create an entertaining area, and take essentials such as sinks and cookers off the walls. In a nutshell, kitchen islands are innovative, functional and offer style and a sense of openness, all of which add to the overall aesthetic of a new luxury kitchen.
If your existing kitchen is on the larger side, kitchen islands are ideal for creating zones to break up an excess of openness. At Papilio, we’re big fans of creating multi-functioning spaces, so incorporating a kitchen island with other elements such as a bar or a break-out section can transform a kitchen. We particularly enjoy designing kitchens where the kitchen island becomes a focal feature of aesthetics and function. The beauty of creating kitchen islands is that they can be matched or contrasted to kitchen cabinetry and can be made from numerous materials from marble or wood and even metals like copper. Kitchen islands are also great for entertaining, and for many of our clients, this is one of their key wishes.

In our Rectory Kitchen project in Somerset, the kitchen island was an excellent example of a sizable and modern L-shaped island configuration. We designed it for functionality to create maximum storage space and to optimise the valley views. The idea was to continually bring the outside in while still providing a practical space for the family to cook and entertain.

A stunning example of a kitchen island that was central to the design of a handmade kitchen can be found in our Richlite Kitchen project. Our cabinet makers used a single oak section and allowed the grain to weave its way along the entire length naturally. As a result, we created more of a sculpture than a kitchen island for the natural yet contemporary kitchen.

The brief for our Copper Kitchen in Somerset was to design a luxury kitchen that incorporated a kitchen island that provided enough seating for at least four people, used solid timbers, and was a functional space to cook, with a wine fridge and the ”wow factor”. We used beautiful solid walnut and oak, Neolith worktops and copper. We aged the copper for a more textured and colourful finish to complement the natural wood grain.
At Papilio, we enjoy transforming spaces into beautiful and functional kitchens. And we have the knowledge and skills to integrate a kitchen island into unusual areas in many forms. So if you’ve been dreaming of a new luxury kitchen, get in touch.
