The Country Kitchen or Farmhouse Kitchen is as much a style as it is a reality in many homes. At Papilio, we are bespoke kitchen design specialists, and we love a challenge! So if your county kitchen needs a complete renovation, but you want to keep some of the original features – whether flooring, windows, exposed stone walls, or fireplaces, our design team can face that challenge. But if you love the idea of a rustic country-style kitchen in an urban or modern setting, we can also help.
Country-style kitchens will forever be on-trend because they offer classic style and grace. They feel homely and warm and inspire the chef within. So many design features can give a country feel, from a marble-topped kitchen island to shaker style wooden panelling. Brass or vintage hardware and lighting can also inspire the country vibe, while terracotta tiles or herringbone flooring instantly offer the farmhouse feel. A range cooker is the epitome of the farmhouse kitchen, and our design team can design the perfect county kitchen with all the features in mind.
Traditional colours in the country kitchen include cream, eggshell – pale, warm, neutral, off-white tones, but we’re big fans of bold decisions! So, if you’re feeling daring, consider sage green, which works beautifully with white marble. But, incredibly, black is a new popular choice because it pairs well with virtually any tone and can look stunning. At the same time, inky and teal blues can work beautifully with natural wood and brass accessories.

We designed and built a bespoke kitchen in a lovingly restored family home in Bruton, Somerset, in our Bruton Kitchen project. The property, dating back to 1600, features stone mullion windows, ancient oak beams, original flagstone flooring, elm doors and wonderfully wonky lath and plaster walls. Our brief was to create an atmospheric space bursting with character and warmth, practical and beautiful, with a contemporary edge befitting a 400-year-old farmhouse. The country kitchen featured an impressive free-standing kitchen island which we hand-painted in a statement sunny yellow, which offered warmth and the wow factor. The country-style bespoke kitchen ticked our client’s boxes, and we loved working on this project.

For our Cotswolds Manor House Kitchen project, we designed a kitchen in a grand 17th Century Grade II listed stone manor house. With elements dating to 1640, including period features such as inglenook and stone fireplaces, mullion windows, exposed timbers, flagstone floors, and wooden panelled window seats, our brief was to design a sympathetic luxury kitchen to the design a style of the property. The country kitchen featured walnut veneer cabinets internals with raised and fielded panel doors and solid brass handles for an element of luxury. The country kitchen also features a utility, a dog washing station, and a Sub Zero wine store pantry. The result was a country-style kitchen in a county home with all the latest technological innovations.
