Just because most pantries, sculleries and larders tend to be hidden away doesn’t mean they should be dull and utilitarian. They are a dream for hiding things and creating extra space, but they should not be overlooked in terms of style and design. As a bespoke kitchen designer, we can design one that is as unique as you are.
First things first. Is there a difference between a pantry, scullery, and larder?
Yes! A scullery is a separate room or area dedicated to cleaning and washing dishes and extra storage and is often referred to as a utility room. A pantry is a storage space for food, ingredients, and sometimes kitchenware. Less necessary these days, a larder is often a cool room to keep certain foods at a lower temperature like vegetables. Regardless, all serve different purposes in a home’s organisation and functionality, and we all want one.
Panties and sculleries needn’t be all about function. They can be bold, mysterious and luxurious. But they should, of course, always do what they need to do, whether for food storage, serving as a boot or mud room, hosting pet stations or being the heavenly walk-in for jars and spices and the envy of Nigella Lawson.
Colour in any bespoke kitchen is an essential consideration, and a custom-made pantry or scullery should not miss out. There are numerous benefits to darker tones. We love deep forest greens, dark reds, rich deep blues and dreamy browns because they tend to be forgiving of scuffs and marks and any regular usage.

We chose the beautiful The Botanist paint by The Paint and Paper Library for our Secret Scullery project. Situated in the heart of rural Somerset, the grand Old Rectory needed a hidden scullery to accompany our bespoke kitchen design. The secret scullery was designed to be hidden and functional. We conceived entrance doors that were disguised within the main kitchen cabinets. The playfulness of this secret space was enriched by painting the cabinets in wonderfully rich and sophisticated mossy green colour. The tone was made with a dash of red, which provides flexibility in many schemes. The paint is manufactured to exceptionally high standards in the UK and found in some of the most prestigious properties around the world.

We designed a beautiful Bespoke Pantry in Bath for clients who had fond memories of their family pantry. They dreamed of a wonderous space full of colourful jars and tins piled high. Our brief was to create a stylish yet sympathetic pantry. We designed an entire shelving wall, sat back onto timer panelling, and masonry wall. The cabinetry was painted in a rich, deep blue, which was the perfect pairing with the golden tones of the bespoke oak ladder and rail and the Carrara marble worktops.

For our Bespoke Scullery in Bath project, we designed a striking scullery featuring dark green Farrow and Ball Bancha hand-painted cabinetry. Perfect for those who want to embrace stronger colour in the home, its sober tone creates rooms that feel calm and serene – perfect for a scullery. This deep olive-green hue was excellent with the golden oak worktops, brass Armac Martin hardware and the characterful Shaws of Darwen ribbed sink. The scullery features low cabinets, slatted open shelving, a stacked Miele washing machine, and a chunky eyeline shelf with brass rails and hooks for jugs and utensils.
Pantries and sculleries are a treat. A hidden gem where all the ‘undesirables’ can be discretely out of sight. Even the smallest sculleries can be mighty with clever bespoke storage pull-out drawers, hanging shelves, and pegboards to maximise every inch.
