Bespoke Natural Kitchens
What is a Natural Kitchen?
Bespoke natural kitchens draw inspiration from nature, organic materials, timber textures, and timeless design. Our natural kitchens are handcrafted to evoke warmth, serenity, and balance. Many feature sustainable materials and connect interiors to the outdoors by framing the views beyond walls and glass. At Papilio, we highlight the rich textures of natural wood and the distinct veining of rare marble, prioritising tactile surfaces and visual intrigue. We often incorporate biophilic details and metals that develop a natural patina to deliver truly bespoke natural kitchens.
Designing with Natural Materials
The natural world has proven to be a powerful way to calm our busy minds, inspire a sense of peace and natural beauty. That’s why Papilio’s natural kitchens are often designed with natural or environmentally conscious materials.
We enjoy designing bespoke kitchens blending natural and sustainable materials, such as Richlite, to create spaces that are both beautiful and modern. Richlite is a durable, eco-friendly composite created from compressed, resin-infused, FSC®-certified recycled paper. We value its sustainability, adaptability, and refined finish. It was ideal for our Richlite Kitchen project, highlighting oak grain with exposed finger joints, hand-cut brass ties, and a single Richlite sheet—the perfect combination for a natural, modern kitchen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a natural kitchen suit a modern new-build home?
Absolutely. A natural kitchen will suit a new-build house. The benefit of a newly built home is that it’s a blank canvas. Our design team can apply the principles of a natural kitchen to suit your needs and style.
My old kitchen doesn’t have a lot of light. Can I still have a natural kitchen?
In the absence of natural light, we will strive to maximise it to create a natural kitchen aesthetic. We can use task and ambient lighting to achieve the look, alongside clever colourways in the cabinetry and walls.
Can a natural kitchen also be modern?
Yes. Our bespoke kitchens, regardless of overall style, will incorporate a level of modernity because we believe a kitchen needs to function well to be easy to navigate and use.

Solid Timber Cabinetry
Papilio’s modern kitchens are built the traditional way, using time-honoured skills and techniques to ensure lasting quality and craftsmanship. Every part is made by hand in the West Country by our master cabinetmakers, using a combination of state-of-the-art machinery and traditional tools and techniques passed down through the generations. This approach ensures durable, unique kitchens tailored to your space and needs.
Timber is inherently distinctive, radiating biological warmth and individual character. No two pieces of English Oak or American Walnut are alike. The knots, medullary rays, and grain patterns create tactile surfaces that can soften the hard lines of natural or engineered countertops and painted cabinetry.
One of the most effective ways to introduce solid timber cabinetry is through a modern kitchen island, and the Cowbridge Kitchen in Wales is a fine example, featuring an understated yet distinctive timber statement for our client’s contemporary, architect-designed home in the Vale of Glamorgan
Modern Kitchen Islands & Entertaining Spaces
We have designed many modern kitchen islands that are the heart of the kitchen. As the centrepiece, the bespoke island becomes a masterpiece of self-expression. A handmade island lets you break away from standard countertop patterns and serves as a space for entertaining, dining, lounging, storage, and more.
Our Georgian Townhouse Kitchen in Bath shows a unique, multifunctional bespoke kitchen island. It includes a dining space with a leather-upholstered banquette, ample storage, and a worktop area. Curved lines and low angles increase functionality and comfort—ideal for entertaining.
Stone, Limewash and Earth-Toned Finishes
Natural kitchens look beautiful with stone, limewash, and earth-toned finishes. Stone is a traditional, yet highly sought-after natural material that has stood the test of time. Our decades in the business mean we have excellent suppliers across Europe for sourcing rare stone, such as marble.
Limewash is a premier option for softening and texturising minimalist walls in natural kitchens. Its irregular finish echoes natural weathering, infusing warmth and interest without toxicity.
Earth-toned finishes complement natural kitchens with timber, stone, and clay. These hues highlight raw materials, helping them resonate by echoing the surrounding landscape.
Natural Light and Open Space
In a natural kitchen, light and space animate raw materials like wood, stone, and limewash. At Papilio, we maximise both to let our kitchens breathe and thrive.
For our Rectory Kitchen in Bath, we collaborated with Simon Morray-Jones architects on a natural kitchen design. It incorporated a large glazed wall and a ceiling lantern, creating a fresh, airy shell for the open-plan kitchen and dining space. The architectural design made the countryside views the focal point of the natural kitchen. It was vital to maintain the tranquil ambience, so we strategically positioned workstations and appliances to continually bring the outside in while providing a practical space for the family to cook and entertain.
Natural Wood Kitchen Styles
Natural wood kitchens often make bold statements. Timber has to be one of the most beautiful, natural materials a bespoke kitchen designer can work with. But it can also be one of the trickiest to use. Natural wood can sometimes be unyielding, so it requires expert carpentry skills. In the right hands, its characteristics can make a piece of furniture stand out as a unique feature.
For a fine example of a bespoke natural wood kitchen, look no further than our Alpine Ski Chalet Kitchen in France. A celebration of timber, the natural kitchen was conceived in a stunning alpine ski chalet barn conversion. Although functional and modern, the natural kitchen pays homage to the barn’s rustic origins. Drawing inspiration from the wooden beams, high ceilings, and spectacular natural vistas, we created a luxurious yet honest kitchen with stunning natural wood.
Sustainable & Responsible Kitchen Design
Papilio bespoke kitchens are crafted by hand, using traditional techniques and only the finest, responsibly sourced materials. We are mindful of our footprint, so we pride ourselves on being a responsible kitchen design company.
Our studio works diligently to reduce waste by only working with high-performance material businesses that also pioneer sustainability. Fenix, Richlite, and Valchromat are three composites that are redefining sustainability and the possibilities of bespoke kitchen design, and are among the best responsibly engineered materials on the market, helping to lower your kitchen’s impact without compromising quality or innovation.
