Modern Bespoke Kitchens
What Defines a Modern Kitchen?
At Papilio, we craft premium, modern bespoke kitchens in our Somerset studio for clients across the UK. Our kitchens are intelligently designed to maximise space and usability, simplifying daily life.
Modern bespoke kitchens are defined by clean lines, sleek finishes, and an uncomplicated look, featuring smart integration with the latest technology and engineering. They showcase materials like wood, metal, and glass, as well as engineered options such as Richlite and Fenix, while avoiding elaborate hardware or embellishments. A modern kitchen should look effortless yet impressive with innovation and style.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do modern kitchens work in period homes?
Yes. Modern kitchens can certainly work in period homes. Our design team will work closely with you to determine which aspects of your period home we can highlight and which we can modernise. We like to be respectful of your home's architecture, so we can suggest numerous ideas for what will work best in the space.
Are modern kitchens handleless?
Modern kitchens can feature handleless cabinetry, and a less fussy, more functional approach is taken with contemporary design. However, we work with exceptional modern hardware designers and can manufacture our own to suit the design.
What colours are popular in modern kitchens?
The modern kitchen palette has moved away from muted, clinical tones and can feature exciting pops of colour. Natural and warm colours are popular, as are moody tones and fresh washes. We will consider natural and feature lighting, as well as the materials used for cabinetry and work surfaces, before advising on colour. With a bespoke kitchen designer, if you love a particular shade, almost anything is possible.

Lighting & Technology Integration
Effective integration is key to our modern bespoke kitchens. Lighting and technology are central, not afterthoughts. Seamless yet effective integration is essential to our process, as poor lighting or misplaced appliances can affect daily life.
Good lighting is more than visibility—it enhances aesthetics, creates ambience, and improves functionality in modern bespoke kitchens. For our Georgian Manor House Kitchen in Somerset, we designed a Scandinavian-style kitchen featuring the iconic In The Tube, 360° light by Dominique Perrault & Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost. Positioned above the handmade island, it makes a bold statement and supports prep work.
Poorly placed appliances can disrupt kitchen flow, so we work closely with clients for optimal integration. In our Cotswolds Manor House Kitchen, we tailored cabinetry and appliances to the chef’s needs and stature.
Modern Kitchen Islands & Entertaining Spaces
We have designed many modern kitchen islands that are the heart of the kitchen. As the centrepiece, the bespoke island becomes a masterpiece of self-expression. A handmade island lets you break away from standard countertop patterns and serves as a space for entertaining, dining, lounging, storage, and more.
Our Georgian Townhouse Kitchen in Bath shows a unique, multifunctional bespoke kitchen island. It includes a dining space with a leather-upholstered banquette, ample storage, and a worktop area. Curved lines and low angles increase functionality and comfort—ideal for entertaining.
Storage Solutions for Contemporary Living
Modern bespoke kitchens must offer smart storage for contemporary living. From handleless drawers with charging stations to hidden pantries, intelligent storage is crucial. Ergonomics and accessibility matter—no one wants to struggle for ingredients or accessories. Modern bespoke kitchens consider every aspect of storage, eliminate dead space, hide clutter, and help make the kitchen the home’s favourite room.
