Bespoke Kitchen Islands Showcase

Bespoke Kitchen Islands Showcase

At Papilio Bespoke Kitchens, we have designed many truly unique kitchen islands over the years. One aspect we have observed is that they have evolved into the kitchen’s literal and figurative heart. As the centrepiece, the bespoke kitchen island ceases to be furniture and becomes a masterpiece of personal expression. A handmade kitchen island allows you to break the rules. Instead of repeating your perimeter countertops, treat the island as a standalone sculpture with contrasting materials, features and function.

If you are planning a new handmade kitchen with an island, you must consider function first, then aesthetics. As a bespoke kitchen designer, we will help you plan and prioritise, but we will also consider what you would like it to achieve. Are you looking for a dining area, a cooking hub, or a streamlined centrepiece that evokes a gasp when you enter the kitchen? The good news is that a tailor-made kitchen island can be all of that, and more.

Here are three unique handmade kitchen islands that break the mould in design. Each is distinct, highlighting our expert design solutions.

The Cowbridge Kitchen in Wales

The Cowbridge Kitchen in Wales

The Cowbridge Kitchen in Wales project is an excellent example of an understated yet distinctive designer kitchen. Set in a contemporary, architect-designed home in the Vale of Glamorgan, the bespoke kitchen celebrates natural and engineered materials.

At the heart of the Papilio design is the contemporary kitchen island. Purposefully positioned as the focal point, it grounds the overall design. The kitchen island remains in constant dialogue with the views beyond the glass. The worktop is crafted from deep black Richlite. Its soft, matte finish provides a striking contrast to the warmth of the handmade oak cabinetry below.

The island drawers are crafted from a single plank of oak, selected for its character. Cracks and voids filled with resin highlight the beauty of natural timber and its imperfections, making the island feel organic. Each drawer is meticulously finger-jointed by our master cabinetmakers. This detail speaks quietly yet confidently of craftsmanship. These joints are not hidden. Instead, they become part of the story, giving the island a unique presence and a sense of permanence.

The North London Kitchen

Kitchen ideas - Luxury Designer Bespoke Kitchen - black and white marble worktop with light oak cupboards by Papilio Kitchens

The impressive North London Kitchen project is one of our boldest designs to date. Showcasing natural materials, including oak-finished cabinets, black-tinted glass, and Arabescato marble, the modern yet warm bespoke kitchen elevates the home’s character.

The focal point of our design is the magnificent kitchen island wrapped in stunning marble, with its soft, curved edges adding a touch of elegance. One side of the island remains minimal, for socialising, resting and displaying delicious treats. The other is purely functional and furnished with handmade storage, including cupboards and drawers.

We aimed to tie the nature-inspired colour palette to establish a sense of calm and cohesion. The contemporary kitchen island, along with other marble features in the pantry entrance, the countertop, and the backsplash, work beautifully with the oak and black glass.

The Georgian Townhouse Kitchen in Bath

The Georgian Town house Kitchen Papilio Kitchens - Designer Kitchens Bath, Frome, Bristol

Our Georgian Townhouse Kitchen in Bath project features a unique, multifunctional bespoke kitchen island. The sophisticated Georgian townhouse kitchen needed contemporary elements to highlight the original features and incorporate a much-needed dining space within a multifunctional central kitchen island.

We designed the handmade kitchen island with curved lines and low angles to maximise functionality, comfort, and storage. We incorporated a banquette seating area to provide much-needed dining space, featuring brown leather and a custom-made walnut dining table. The island features casters for easy movement around the space when entertaining, while the unit offers ample storage finished with Armac Martin hardware.

The overall design cleverly uses space to create a sophisticated yet contemporary kitchen in Bath.
