As you prepare to run around the house putting all the clocks back an hour, it’s hard to ignore the shorter days. Rather than dread the coming winter, perhaps you can embrace it with a few cheery design tweaks to get you into the right mood. New colours, epic food, bespoke furniture, and loving the winter feeling await!
After all, there is plenty to look forward to. Drinks with friends with mulled wine, producing one of the very best smells you’ll find in a kitchen, on the stovetop. Those extra luxurious family meals over Christmas. The special winter recipes that work so well when the weather is that little bit colder, like slow-cooked stews and spicy soups. Treating yourself to a new look kitchen.
As a Kitchen design company, we love finding ways to make kitchens stand out in all the seasons. So without further ado, here are our top 5 tips for winning with winter in your kitchen.
- Start jamming with the season
If you have a kitchen garden, you’ll be overwhelmed with the weight of September’s tomatoes and October’s apples. Even if you need to buy the raw ingredients, making jams, chutneys, sauces, and spreads is a really relaxing way to spend time the kitchen. You’ll love having all those homemade goodies in the pantry and they make for great presents when visiting friends and relatives.
- Get busy with a paintbrush
While it may sound drastic to repaint an area because winter is on its way, it can really redefine how your household feels as we hit the shorter days. Alex Roberts, Product Development Manager of Aussie paint brand Tint, has revealed the colours that are trending for this winter and why.
“In 2020 you should go with the moodiness of winter and embrace those rich tones, dabble in deep greens, warm clays and broody browns.” she said, “This year in general, warm colours are stepping up and pushing us away from those cooler tones we have been used to.”
- Light up the dark nights
Making some slight tweaks to your lighting scheme can really change the emotional impact of a space. Check your light bulb colour temperatures and take a look at where directional lights are pointed. If you can soften the lighting it can help make spaces cosier. Dust off the candlesticks and bring out the winter scented candles. Long games of Monopoly on the sofa with the family make for a really happy time with soft lighting.
- Soften things up with soft furnishings
As well at rotating your cushions to match the winter season, you can lay on some blankets. The simple pleasures of a cold winter Sunday afternoon film session with the family (or the dogs, if the kids are busy!) can’t be understated. Rugs can also make things feel warmer, on the feet if nothing else.

- Go full-on with a total kitchen redesign
