5 Focus points to consider for your kitchen

Like most rooms of the house, a kitchen can really benefit from a focal point. Exactly as it sounds, this is an area, object, or design feature that naturally draws the eye and gives a bit of ‘wow factor’.

This deceptively simple concept is something that Papilio design consultants use when the brief allows or demands it. It might be the way that the eye is drawn to a particular place or something more direct like a piece of furniture or specific design feature.

  1. When you’ve got a view worth showing, show it.

Stunning views can make a handmade kitchen a spectacular place to spend time. Even something as mundane as chopping the veg for Sunday lunch becomes a feast for the eye if you’re looking at the spires of Oxford or the Quantock Hills in Somerset.

While floor to ceiling windows are sometimes the right choice, in some cases it’s just about getting the windows set right.

  1. If you don’t have the views, make the wall the centre of attention

The great thing about a custom kitchen is that a great bespoke kitchen designer will find the positives. No views, no problem! A textured wall can be a really smart way to bring focus to a minimal or monochrome handmade kitchen design. With clever use of sheen and texture, a wall can become something that adds pop, rather than fades into the background.

  1. Put your passion on display

If you’ve got a love of Masamoto sushi knives or a homemade pickle collection that’s the envy of the village, then we can find a way to give it subtle focus. This might simply mean an open pantry design or using lighting to bring the eye to a particular location in the kitchen.

The great thing about handmade kitchens is that the finest attention to detail is possible.

  1. Make your worktop the hero

While large runs of worktop don’t normally make a good focus point, since they can overpower the eye, you can create an accent focus with a standout section.

A breakfast bar in a high contrast material, or even raised using metal castings. A kitchen island with bold accenting. These are examples of ways the surfaces of the kitchen can be the star of the show.

  1. Appliances that are a touch above

Let’s not forget that a kitchen is a place to cook. While not everyone needs top-notch kitchen appliances, for some they are what makes the perfect kitchen. Appliances can become the focal point with either their placement, their design, or both.

Papilio supplies a range of outstanding appliances from Wolf, Miele, and Sub Zero and can ensure they take pride of place in the design.

Our bespoke kitchen designer understands that your kitchen space must meet a specific set of needs. We’ll sit and talk with you about how you want your kitchen to feel. When you walk in. When you entertain. When you cook.

From this we’ll be able to suggest ways that focus can be given to the things you care about. This way you’ll get exactly the kitchen you imagined and dreamed of.
